Conference Activities

Conference participants will be treated to a choice of informative and entertaining activities.

Technical Visit 1
MTQ's Traffic Management Centre & Ville-Marie Tunnel
Since 1994, the Quebec Ministry of Transportation (Ministère des Transports du Québec) has operated a freeway traffic management system in the Greater Montreal area. This system, which features incident management (remote monitoring, automatic incident detection and response procedures) and real-time driver information (variable message displays), has been designed to ensure the safety of road users and to improve traffic flow. This system is regularly updated with the very latest innovations in traffic control technology, most notably: display products, telecommunications and software.

Technical Visit 2
Center for Research on Transportation
The Centre for Research on Transportation (CRT) of the University of Montreal is one of the most important university centres in the field of transportation study in North America. Over 50 researchers, drawn from many fields of expertise, are affiliated with the Centre. Professor Michel Gendreau, the Centre's director, will welcome visitors and will discuss the Centre's major achievements as well as ongoing projects. A visit of the facilities will follow.

Guided Tour
Between River and Mountain: A First Encounter with the City
L'autre Montréal offers an alternative introduction to the city's history, culture and architecture. From the heights of Mount Royal to the industrial south-west and the riverfront in Old Montreal, this unusual tour, which is especially designed for visitors, explores the basic patterns of Montreal's social reality. Transportation Planning models
Two-day Course by Dr. Ali Mekky
October 16-17, 2006, Montreal, Quebec

This is a condensed course that is designed for the introductory/ intermediate level of practitioners in transportation planning/ modelling (sequential four-stage model). Please see details, including cost information, at http://www3.sympatico.ca/amekky/.

Montreal Canadiens Hockey
Depending on their availability, tickets could be purchased on behalf of participants interested to attend a live NHL hockey game. Cheer the home team Canadiens as they host the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, October 17 from 7:30 to 10:00pm at the Centre Bell, which is located a 600-metre walk from the conference hotel or a two-stop ride on the metro. Please indicate if you might want to attend the game on the registration form and you will be contacted as details become available.
